For years, many Nigerians knew Sola Sobowale as Toyin Tomato, the loud, scheming wife in a popular television drama. Then, in her fifties, she played two roles that made her one of the most celebrated actresses in Nollywood: the overbearing mother of the bride in The Wedding Party and Eniola Salami, the businesswoman and crime boss at the centre of King of Boys. Her late-career rise is one of the great success stories of modern Nigerian film.
Early career and The Wedding Party
Sola Sobowale began acting in Yoruba theatre and films, working with travelling theatre groups and appearing in popular Yoruba-language movies. She built a loyal following among Yoruba audiences. Her role as Toyin Tomato in the long-running television series Super Story: Oh Father, Oh Daughter made her a household name. The character was so memorable that many fans still call her by that name.
In The Wedding Party (2016), she played Tinuade Coker, the bride’s mother, whose temper and drama provided some of the film’s biggest laughs. The film became one of Nollywood’s highest-grossing productions.

King of Boys and awards
In 2018, Kemi Adetiba cast her as Eniola Salami in King of Boys, a political crime drama. Her performance as a ruthless and complicated woman won wide praise and several awards. She returned as Eniola Salami in King of Boys: The Return of the King, a 2021 Netflix series. The show reached audiences around the world. Her ability to move from comedy to intense drama surprised viewers who had known her mainly for comic roles.
Her work in King of Boys earned her recognition at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and other ceremonies.
Personal life and legacy
She is a mother and has spoken about faith and family in interviews. Her success has encouraged producers to write strong roles for older actresses. Directors often mention her voice and timing. Whether shouting at a wedding planner or giving orders to political allies, she can dominate a scene without moving very much, a skill built over years on stage.
Sola Sobowale spent decades as a familiar face before King of Boys made her a star. In Nollywood, it turned out, the best role of a career can still arrive late.
