Kalybos: the Ghanaian comic actor who found fame with Ahoufe Patri

In the 2010s, a skinny young comedian with a cheeky grin and quick tongue started appearing in Ghanaian comedy series and online skits. His partner on screen was Ahoufe Patri, and their chemistry made audiences laugh across the country. The comedian was Richard Kwaku Asante, better known as Kalybos. He became one of the faces of a new wave of Ghanaian comedy, mixing Twi and English, street humour and slapstick, and he went on to star in his own films.

Who he is and Boys Kasa

Kalybos is the stage name of Richard Kwaku Asante, a Ghanaian actor and comedian. Kalybos became famous through his on-screen partnership with Ahoufe Patri, real name Priscilla Opoku-Agyeman. Their comic sketches drew large audiences. The pair appeared in the comedy series Boys Kasa, which helped make them household names. In 2015, he starred in Kalybos in China, a comedy about a Ghanaian man’s adventures abroad.

His humour relies on facial expressions, timing and exaggerated characters drawn from everyday Ghanaian life. Like many Ghanaian comedians, he uses a mix of Twi, Pidgin and English.

Social media, films and endorsements

Short videos on social media have helped him reach young audiences. He has appeared in a number of Ghanaian comedies and dramas. His popularity has brought brand endorsements and appearances at events. Kalybos is part of a generation of comedians who moved from television to online platforms. Their on-screen chemistry led many fans to ask whether the pair were a couple in real life, a question that followed them for years.

He has continued working in film, skits and events. For many Ghanaians, Kalybos and Ahoufe Patri remain one of the country’s best-loved comedy duos.

Ghana's comedy scene and the name

Ghanaian comedy grew quickly in the 2010s. Stand-up shows filled halls in Accra, television stations commissioned sitcoms and young performers built followings online with short sketches. Kalybos rose with that wave, and his work with Ahoufe Patri helped prove that local-language comedy could reach national audiences. The stage name Kalybos became so well known that many fans use it more than his real name.

Many viewers only know Richard Kwaku Asante as Kalybos. Some are surprised to learn that Kalybos is not his real name.
