Queen Amina of Zazzau has been a legend in northern Nigeria for centuries, a warrior princess said to have led armies and built walls around her cities. In 2021, her story reached Netflix. Amina, directed by Izu Ojukwu, brought battles, palace intrigue and a heroine on horseback to screens around the world. It was one of Nollywood’s most ambitious historical films.

The story, cast and Netflix

The film follows Amina’s rise from princess to warrior queen of Zazzau, the Hausa kingdom later known as Zaria. Izu Ojukwu, director of the acclaimed film 76, directed Amina. Lucy Ameh plays Amina, carrying the film’s action and drama.

The cast includes well-known Nigerian actors from Nollywood and Kannywood. The film used large sets, costumes and battle scenes. Amina was released on Netflix in 2021, reaching viewers in many countries. Viewers praised its ambition and the choice of subject, while some critics found parts of the story uneven.

History, legend and the real Amina

The film draws on traditions about Amina, whose life is known mainly through oral history and later chronicles. Amina joined a growing number of films celebrating African women leaders, such as The Woman King. The film brought northern Nigerian history to a global audience. The film is mostly in English, with some Hausa. It showed Nollywood’s growing interest in historical epics.

Historical sources for Amina come mainly from later chronicles and oral traditions, which describe a sixteenth-century princess of Zazzau who led military campaigns and expanded her kingdom’s influence. The film takes these traditions and builds a dramatic story around them, adding characters and conflicts for the screen.

Battles, costumes and audiences

The film’s battle scenes, with horsemen, swords and fortified walls, were among the most ambitious ever attempted in Nollywood. Izu Ojukwu’s earlier film 76, set in the aftermath of the 1976 coup attempt, had won international praise, raising expectations for Amina. Costume designers created royal robes, armour and jewellery inspired by Hausa culture. The film reached viewers in Africa, Europe and the Americas who had never heard of Zazzau.

The role demanded horse riding, sword fighting and dramatic scenes, a major challenge for the lead actress. Amina’s walls still stand in parts of Zaria. Netflix gave her story a new audience that had never heard her name.
