Former Vice President and flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a surprise appearance at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) Headquarters in Accra, demanding answers over the sudden arrest and detention of the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi’s arrest, believed to be politically motivated by some party members, has sparked outrage within the NPP base, with party bigwigs calling for immediate transparency and due process.
Dr. Bawumia, who arrived at the NIB premises with key party officials and legal aides, is said to have engaged the Bureau’s top brass in a closed-door meeting, seeking clarity on the grounds for the arrest and pushing for the party chairman’s release.
Eyewitnesses outside the NIB building described scenes of intense security and heightened tension, as loyal supporters and media personnel tried to gather information.
The visit by the NPP flagbearer underscores the seriousness of the issue, as Chairman Wontumi is not only a regional chairman but a powerful political force in the party’s stronghold.
With the 2024 elections fast approaching, this incident adds fuel to an already charged political atmosphere. Many within the party believe the timing of the arrest is questionable and threatens to destabilize their campaign machinery.
Ghanaians now await official communication from both the NIB and the NPP. Will Wontumi walk free? Or is this the beginning of a deeper political storm?
