Ghanaians pay tribute to veteran actor Mawuli Semevo following his passing from fire accident complications

Ghana’s film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Mawuli Semevo, who tragically passed away at the Ridge Hospital after succumbing to injuries sustained in a domestic fire accident.

The fire, which broke out at his Adenta SSNIT flats on Friday, February 7, caught Semevo while he was asleep in his bedroom. In an attempt to escape, he ran through the flames but collapsed outside, where neighbors rushed him to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, including a 21-day survival prognosis, Semevo passed away 13 days later.

Semevo, celebrated for his versatile acting talent, leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances. His filmography includes roles in popular films such as Harvest at 17, A Stab in the Dark, ‘Escape of Love‘, and Like Cotton Twines. He was also known for his portrayal of Baba Fakunle in the adaptation of Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame, staged at the National Theatre in 2024.

Fellow actor and Creative Lead for Image Bureau, George Quaye, confirmed Semevo’s death and paid tribute to his remarkable career. Quaye shared poignant messages honoring Semevo’s contribution to the arts, “In shadows deep, the stage now stands so bare, The laughter fades, replaced by heavy air…” Semevo’s passing has left a void in Ghana’s entertainment industry, with colleagues and fans alike grieving the loss of a beloved actor.
