In 2018, Childish Gambino released This Is America, a video that sparked debate across the United States. Weeks later, a Nigerian rapper released his own version. Falz’s This Is Nigeria mocked corruption, fraud, police brutality and religious exploitation in sharp, uncomfortable detail. The song went viral and confirmed what fans already knew: Falz was a satirist with something to say as well as an entertainer.

Early life and law

Folarin Falana was born in 1990. His father is Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, and his mother, Funmi Falana, is also a lawyer. Falz studied law in the United Kingdom and was called to the Nigerian bar before focusing on entertainment. He built a following with witty, humorous rap songs and a distinctive accent, often playing characters in his music.

This Is Nigeria, acting and EndSARS

His 2018 song This Is Nigeria was praised for its bold criticism of Nigerian society and drew responses from religious groups who objected to some of its imagery. Falz has acted in films such as The Wedding Party and Brotherhood, showing both comic and dramatic skills. During the 2020 EndSARS protests against police brutality, Falz was one of the most visible celebrity supporters, joining protests and amplifying demands.

His albums include Moral Instruction, which drew on the style of Fela Kuti to address social issues.

Comedy and activism

He is known for comic skits and characters, which helped build his audience. He continues to comment on governance, corruption and youth issues. He has spoken about how his parents’ human rights work shaped his views. He has worked with many Nigerian artists across music and film. He is often cited as proof that Nigerian pop stars can be politically engaged.

Falz often plays exaggerated characters in his videos and skits, using humour to point at serious issues. His accent and comic timing have made many of his lines into popular catchphrases among young Nigerians.

The song's reception

Some Muslim groups objected to scenes in the This Is Nigeria video and demanded it be withdrawn, while many fans defended it as fair satire. The controversy kept the song in the headlines for weeks and added to its reach. Falz grew up in a house of human rights lawyers. He took their arguments out of the courtroom and into songs and films that millions of young Nigerians quote.
