A group representing the minority in Ghana’s Parliament on Wednesday walked to the Police Headquarters in Accra to petition the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over what they describe as an “unacceptable delay” in the official declaration of parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North constituency.
The group is calling on the IGP to ensure the Electoral Commission (EC) is able to perform its constitutional duty without intimidation, alleging interference and obstruction in the collation process.
In a video seen by Ghanaian blogger King Bygone and reported by The 1957 News, former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Hon. Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had clearly won the parliamentary race. According to her, the party possesses all relevant documentation to support its claim.
“We’ve done the collation with EC agents six times. We have the pink sheets. We won this hands down,” she stated.
When asked if she supports calls for a re-run of the parliamentary election in the constituency, Hon. Owusu Afriyie was firm in her response: “No. I don’t support a re-run. We’ve already won. There’s no need.”
The delay in the EC’s declaration has raised tensions in the constituency, with supporters from both the NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanding clarity. While the NPP insists its candidate won convincingly, the NDC has not publicly conceded.
The Minority’s visit to the Police Headquarters is part of a broader concern about what they describe as a pattern of electoral bottlenecks in specific constituencies, especially where results do not favor certain interests.
The Electoral Commission has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the delay in declaring the Ablekuma North parliamentary results. Political observers say the situation adds to growing concerns about electoral transparency and trust in democratic institutions.
As it stands, pressure continues to mount on both the EC and the police to bring closure to the matter.
