A police officer seen on video assaulting a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun has been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the development in an official statement, noting that the officer, who was initially removed from duty, is now being held accountable under criminal law.
“In line with due process, the police officer captured in one of the videos assaulting a journalist who was interdicted, has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the statement said.
The incident occurred during voting at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station on Friday, July 11, 2025.
Violence broke out, causing temporary disruptions. Among those reportedly attacked was former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Police later stepped in to restore order.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that further arrests will be made soon. Investigators say they are working with new leads uncovered through video footage, statements from victims, and eyewitness accounts.
In a press release signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, the police emphasized that they are taking the matter seriously and are actively reviewing all evidence to identify those responsible for the violence.
“The command has progressed to obtain statements from complainants and witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
“The Police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon.”
Medical forms have been issued to those injured in the incident.
Police are also urging the public to come forward with any credible information that could help move the investigation forward.
