Luxury cars, designer clothes, lavish parties and dramatic arguments: The Real Housewives of Lagos brought the famous American reality format to Nigeria in 2022. Premiering on the streaming platform Showmax, it followed a group of wealthy and well-known Lagos women through their businesses, friendships and feuds. Viewers watched, argued about the cast on social media and made the show one of the biggest topics of conversation in Nigerian entertainment that year.
The franchise, cast and lifestyle
The Real Housewives franchise began in the United States in 2006 with The Real Housewives of Orange County. It has spread to many cities and countries. Showmax, the streaming service owned by MultiChoice, produced the Lagos version as part of its push into African original content. The first season featured women including Toyin Lawani, Iyabo Ojo, Laura Ikeji, Carolyna Hutchings, Chioma Goodhair and Mariam Timmer.
The show presented a glamorous side of Lagos, with luxury homes, parties and events in Lekki, Ikoyi and Victoria Island. Many cast members run businesses in fashion, beauty and entertainment, and the show featured their work.
Drama, viewers and criticism
As with other Real Housewives shows, arguments and rivalries drew attention. Clips spread quickly on social media. Showmax reported strong viewership, and the show helped boost the platform in Nigeria. Some viewers criticised the show for promoting materialism or staged drama, while others enjoyed it as entertainment. The show returned for further seasons with changes to the cast.
South Africa has several Real Housewives versions, including Johannesburg and Durban, and Nigeria also got an Abuja edition. Cast members gained followers and sponsorship deals from their appearances, turning the show into a platform for their businesses.
The reality boom and reunions
The show was part of a wider boom in African reality television alongside Big Brother Naija. Outfits worn on the show were widely discussed online, with viewers following the cast’s fashion choices from reunion gowns to party looks. As with other versions of the franchise, reunion episodes brought the cast together to confront arguments from the season, often producing the most-watched moments.
The Real Housewives of Lagos claimed to show real life in the city’s richest neighbourhoods. Most of its viewers watched from neighbourhoods that looked nothing like them.
