Ashaiman sits beside the Tema motorway, a crowded town of workers, traders and young people trying to make it. In the 2000s, one of them was a teenager who rapped and sang reggae at school events and street jams. Livingstone Etse Satekla, now known to the world as Stonebwoy, went on to become one of Ghana’s most successful musicians, carrying a sound shaped by Jamaican dancehall and Ghanaian rhythms to stages across the world.

Early life and breakthrough

Stonebwoy was born in 1988 and grew up in Ashaiman, near Tema. His family has roots in the Volta Region, which he often celebrates in his music. He began performing as a teenager. His early hits in the early 2010s, singing in a mix of English, Ewe, Twi and patois, made him a leading voice of Ghanaian dancehall. His high-energy performances built a loyal fan base.

BET and VGMA wins

In 2015, Stonebwoy won Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards, one of the biggest honours for a Ghanaian musician at the time.

He was named Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in 2015, and won the top prize again at the awards in 2024. He runs his own label, Burniton Music Group, and calls his fan base the Bhim Nation. His concerts, including the annual Bhim Concert, draw large crowds.

Albums, the 2019 incident and family

His albums include Grace, Epistles of Mama, Anloga Junction and 5th Dimension, which featured international collaborators and pushed his sound further. At the 2019 VGMAs, a clash between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale’s camps on stage led to both artists being banned from that year’s awards. The incident caused national debate, and Stonebwoy later apologised. His rivalry with Shatta Wale dominated Ghanaian entertainment headlines for years, though the two have also shown moments of reconciliation.

Stonebwoy married Dr Louisa Ansong in 2017, and the couple have children. He often shares family moments with fans.

Volta roots and influence

Stonebwoy often sings in Ewe and has named songs and an album after places in the Volta Region, such as Anloga, keeping his family’s home area at the centre of his identity. Younger Ghanaian dancehall and reggae artists cite him as a model for building a career at home while reaching global audiences. Ashaiman produced many hopeful young musicians in the 2000s. Stonebwoy is the one who took the town’s name, and its sound, to the BET Awards stage.
