Every season, a group of young Nigerians moves into a house full of cameras, and for weeks the country argues about them. Fans form online armies, celebrities pick favourites and votes pour in by the million. Big Brother Naija has become one of Africa’s most watched television shows, turning ordinary housemates into stars and launching careers in music, acting and business.

The first season and the format

The show began in 2006 as Big Brother Nigeria. It was won by Katung Aduwak, but the show did not return for several years. In 2017, the show returned as Big Brother Naija. The season was won by Efe Ejeba, whose slogan “Based on logistics” became famous. Housemates live together, complete tasks and face eviction votes from viewers. The last person standing wins a large cash prize and sponsored gifts.

Ebuka and the winners

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, himself a former Big Brother housemate, has hosted the show since its return. His outfits on live eviction nights are a talking point of their own. In 2019, Mercy Eke became the first woman to win Big Brother Naija. She has since built a business and media career. Laycon, a rapper, won the 2020 season, which drew record votes. His fan base, known as Icons, campaigned fiercely online.

In 2023, an All Stars edition brought back former housemates. Ilebaye won.

Fan culture, careers and sponsors

Fans form named groups, fund campaigns and trend hashtags. Online arguments between fan bases can become heated. Former housemates have become actors, presenters, influencers and entrepreneurs. Critics say the show promotes immorality and wastes young people’s time. Regulators have occasionally warned broadcasters about content. Big brands pay to sponsor tasks and products in the house, and the show is a major source of revenue for Multichoice.

The show has inspired reality formats across Africa and kept Big Brother popular when it faded elsewhere.

Voting and live shows

Viewers vote through an app and other channels, and the scale of voting in some seasons ran into the tens of millions. Fans often pool money to buy extra votes for their favourite housemate. Sunday eviction shows are the high point of each week, drawing big audiences and dominating social media conversation in Nigeria. Big Brother Naija began as a television experiment. It now works as one of Nigeria’s fastest routes to fame, judged entirely by viewers with their phones.
