At least 35 commercial flights across Europe were searched or diverted this week following a wave of hoax bomb threats. Among the targeted planes was Ryanair flight FR8196, travelling from Rome to Lisbon, according to Portuguese media reports.
Authorities responded by initiating security protocols to examine the credibility of the threats, CNN Portugal reported. Passengers on the affected flights faced delays while security teams conducted thorough inspections of the aircraft and airport facilities.
The spate of incidents disrupted air traffic across multiple European airports, though official details on the total list of affected flights or airlines remain limited. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the source of the threats. No explosives were found during searches, and no injuries have been reported.
The timing of the threats coincided with a busy travel period in Europe, increasing pressure on airport security and airline operations. The interruptions caused logistical challenges for passengers and crew, with some flights diverted to alternate airports for safety checks.
European aviation authorities have not issued a detailed statement addressing the hoaxes. Ryanair did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The wave of bomb threats comes amid wider concerns about airline security and the potential for disruptive acts targeting transportation networks. The authorities continue to assess intelligence and scan for any further threats.
The incident has prompted renewed vigilance at European airports, with security forces maintaining a heightened presence as they work to prevent any actual attacks. The investigation is ongoing, with officials urging the public to remain alert but not alarmed.
