Traditional priest Nana Kwaku Bonsam has voiced his disappointment after being prevented from greeting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the funeral rites at Manhyia Palace.
In a video circulating on social media, Bonsam explained that he was stopped by police officers when he attempted to pay his respects. “They didn’t allow me to enter. When I was going to greet, a policeman approached and said he went to ask if I should come, and they said no, there’s protocol,” he said.
According to Bonsam, the restriction was unfair given his role as a prominent traditional priest in Ghana. He argued that his position should have earned him the right to greet the Asantehene during such an important cultural occasion.
Nana Kwaku Bonsam, born Stephen Osei Mensah, is one of Ghana’s most well-known traditional spiritual leaders. Over the years, he has attracted public attention for his outspoken nature and involvement in matters relating to traditional religion, politics, and social issues. His influence extends beyond Ghana, with followers across West Africa who regard him as a high-ranking priest with strong spiritual authority.
The event at Manhyia Palace was part of the funeral activities honoring the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, mother of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The rites brought together chiefs, dignitaries, and citizens from across the country to pay their last respects. Strict security and ceremonial protocols were in place to manage the large crowds and maintain order.
For Bonsam, however, the restrictions felt like a slight. He maintained that as a traditional priest, his presence was not only appropriate but significant. “As a high chief priest of the nation, I should have been allowed,” he remarked in his video statement.
The funeral continues to draw national attention, highlighting both the cultural weight of Ashanti tradition and the delicate balance between protocol, respect, and individual expectations at such historic moments.
