When Calvin Bassey left Leicester City’s academy for Rangers in 2020, few outside Scotland paid attention. Two years later, he was starring in a European final. The left-footed defender’s rise was rapid: from youth football to the Europa League final with Rangers, a big-money move to Ajax and then the Premier League with Fulham. For Nigeria, he became one of the Super Eagles’ most dependable defenders.
Rangers, Ajax, Fulham and Nigeria
Bassey was born in 1999 and grew up in London to Nigerian parents. He played youth football at Leicester City’s academy. He joined Rangers in 2020 and developed into a first-team regular under Steven Gerrard and later Giovanni van Bronckhorst. In 2022, Rangers reached the Europa League final, losing to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties. Bassey impressed throughout the run.

He moved to Ajax in the Netherlands in 2022. In 2023, he joined Fulham in the Premier League. Bassey chose to represent Nigeria and made his debut in 2022.
AFCON 2023 and his style
He was a key member of the Nigeria team that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He is known for strength, pace and confidence on the ball, able to play at centre-back or left-back. Coaches value his ability to play in more than one position. He is one of several British-born players of Nigerian heritage in the Super Eagles squad.
He has spoken about the importance of his Nigerian heritage and family. Still in his twenties, he is expected to remain a key part of Nigeria’s defence for years.
Learning at Rangers and after
At Rangers, Bassey was converted from left-back to centre-back, a change that coaches credit with unlocking his potential. Playing in front of huge crowds at Ibrox and in European competition gave him experience far beyond his years. His move to Ajax was one of the club’s biggest signings that summer, showing how much his value had grown in just two seasons.
At Fulham, he has played in different defensive positions and become a regular in the Premier League. Calvin Bassey left an English academy for Scotland with little fanfare. Within a few years he was playing in a European final and in an AFCON final for Nigeria.
