Even people who have never watched a Yoruba film know his face. Odunlade Adekola’s expressions, wide-eyed, shocked or scheming, have become some of the most shared memes on Nigerian social media. Behind the memes is one of the most successful actors in Yoruba cinema, a producer and a star who took the lead in one of Netflix’s most ambitious Nigerian films.

Early life and the memes

Odunlade Adekola was born in 1976 and grew up in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He began acting in Yoruba films in the 1990s and gradually built a reputation for comedy and drama. Yoruba-language films have a huge audience in south-west Nigeria and among Yoruba speakers abroad. Adekola became one of the genre’s top names.

He produces his own films through his company, releasing them on video, television and online. Screenshots from his films became widely used memes, making him famous far beyond Yoruba film audiences.

Elesin Oba, Jagun Jagun and awards

In 2022, he played the lead role in Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, Biyi Bandele’s adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s play. He also appeared in Jagun Jagun, the 2023 Yoruba epic that became a Netflix hit. He has won awards for his work in indigenous-language films. His popularity has made him a sought-after brand ambassador. He has spoken about returning to education later in life to further his studies.

He is married with children and shares family moments occasionally. He is seen as one of the actors who helped Yoruba cinema reach new audiences online.

Comedy, drama and hometown pride

Adekola moves easily between slapstick comedy and serious drama. In many Yoruba films, he plays characters who scheme, panic or blunder, and his timing makes audiences laugh. In more serious roles, such as Elesin Oba, critics noted the depth he brought to tragic characters. He has a huge following online and often jokes about his own memes, which has endeared him further to fans.

Yoruba films now reach audiences through YouTube channels and streaming platforms as well as television, and Adekola has embraced these platforms. Abeokuta takes pride in him as one of its best-known sons in entertainment. Odunlade Adekola’s face sells jokes on social media every day. His career shows that the man behind the meme is one of Nollywood’s hardest-working actors.
