The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man for impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding multiple victims under the guise of securing overseas travel opportunities.
Fredrick Papa Kow-Assifuah was apprehended on Thursday, June 6, 2025, by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) at Kasoa Crispo City in the Central Region. According to police, Kow-Assifuah was dressed in a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck at the time of arrest and had arranged to meet another unsuspecting victim he had contacted online.
A search of his premises revealed several medical items, including stethoscopes, IV drips, syringes, vaccines, a Ghanaian passport, and GH¢8,500 in cash.
Police say the suspect admitted during questioning that he had been posing as a doctor at United Brain Hospital in Mallam, Accra. He confessed to using this false identity to gain the trust of women online, forming relationships with them, and tricking them into paying for bogus travel arrangements to Europe.
“The suspect used medical props to appear credible and targeted vulnerable individuals looking for opportunities abroad,” said a police spokesperson. “This arrest was the result of a coordinated intelligence-led operation, and investigations are ongoing.”
The Police Intelligence Directorate acted on leads after reports from victims who had become suspicious of the suspect’s activities. Authorities believe there may be more victims and are urging anyone who had dealings with Kow-Assifuah to come forward.
The Ghana Police Service continues to warn the public to be cautious of individuals claiming to offer overseas opportunities, especially through unofficial channels. “People should always verify the credentials of individuals who demand money for services, particularly when it involves international travel or employment,” the spokesperson added.
Kow-Assifuah remains in custody and is assisting with investigations. Police say he will be arraigned before court in the coming days.
