Thomas Markle was arrested outside Tampa, Florida, on Friday, November 6, on federal charges of possessing child sexual abuse material. The 82-year-old, father of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, faces one count of possession of child pornography.
According to the Department of Justice, investigators found sexually explicit photographs involving Markle and prepubescent girls stored in two Los Angeles storage units. The FBI seized 78 items, including film negatives, slides, and books containing suspected child sexual abuse material. Two images reportedly depict Markle with a nude prepubescent girl in a motel room in the Philippines. Additional photographs show children in various stages of undress, some appearing alongside Markle.
“The FBI and our partners have arrested Thomas Markle Sr. after an FBI investigation revealed he was in possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM),” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a press release. Patel added that Mr. Markle “allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions.” The operation involved cooperation with law enforcement agencies in Mexico, Manila, and the Marshall Islands, Patel noted.
The allegations surfaced after Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., said he found disturbing images at his father’s home in the Philippines, according to The Sun. The DOJ affidavit described the material as including two images of an adult man identified by a witness as Markle with a nude prepubescent girl, and a third showing a nude girl in a room appearing to be part of a motel chain in the Philippines.
Meghan Markle’s relationship with her father has been strained for years. He did not attend her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry and has not met his grandchildren. The British media extensively covered their estrangement, often criticising Meghan. Piers Morgan, a former host of Good Morning Britain, repeatedly interviewed Markle Sr. and criticised the Duchess for distancing herself from her father. Morgan also blamed Meghan for not reporting the allegations to authorities sooner.
Fans weighed in on social media after the arrest. On TSR’s Instagram page, users expressed support for Meghan and criticised the British press’s treatment of her. User @onlypenelopepina wrote, “And the British media was upset with Megan and tried to demonize her for not loving her father enough or including him in her life now look!!!!” Others echoed similar sentiments, pointing to the media’s relentless focus on Meghan’s family choices.
Meghan Markle issued a statement to PEOPLE before the arrest became public. “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” she said. She recalled a 2018 letter sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection making “troubling and disturbing allegations” against her father, which she was assured were being investigated.
She addressed the public narrative around their estrangement: “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.” Meghan added that she trusted authorities to protect other families as well.
The FBI’s announcement confirmed the arrest followed a swift investigation by its Los Angeles and Tampa offices, in collaboration with international law enforcement. Thomas Markle Sr. is currently held in Florida pending further legal proceedings.
