Before streaming, the easiest way for many Africans outside Nigeria to watch Nollywood films was through a satellite channel called Africa Magic. From Nairobi to Johannesburg to Accra, viewers tuned in to watch Nigerian dramas, comedies and epics. The channel helped turn Nollywood into a pan-African phenomenon and made its stars familiar in homes far from Lagos.
Launch and more channels
Africa Magic was launched in 2003 by M-Net, part of the MultiChoice group, on its DStv satellite service. It focused on African films, especially Nigerian productions. At the time, Nollywood was producing hundreds of films a year, mostly for home video. Africa Magic bought broadcast rights and gave these films a continental audience. Over the years, Africa Magic expanded into several channels, including ones dedicated to Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa films, family content and epic dramas.

Original productions and the AMVCA
The channel began commissioning its own series and films, including dramas and reality shows, giving work to Nigerian producers and actors. In 2013, Africa Magic created the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, which have become one of the biggest awards events in African film and television. Regular broadcast income helped some producers, while the channel’s reach made actors famous across Africa. Fans in East and Southern Africa learned Nigerian slang from the films.
Competition and cultural impact
Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Showmax and others have changed how audiences watch Nollywood, but Africa Magic remains a major outlet. Some filmmakers have complained about the prices paid for broadcast rights, a common issue in the industry. For many viewers across East and Southern Africa, Africa Magic was their first introduction to Nigerian culture, fashion and humour.
The channels dedicated to Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa films gave local-language productions a platform beyond their home regions. Some content carried English subtitles, allowing viewers from other parts of Africa to follow along.
Reality television
Africa Magic also became home to reality and talk shows, broadening its schedule beyond films. These programmes helped build new celebrities alongside the actors who had made the channel famous. Africa Magic began by buying films that had already been made for the market stalls of Lagos. Two decades later, its awards night is where Nollywood’s stars go to be judged by viewers across the continent.
