Her most famous character is a young woman who lies about everything: her family, her money, her life. In the Alakada films, Toyin Abraham plays a pretender whose schemes always unravel, and audiences love her for it. The franchise helped make Toyin Abraham one of Nollywood’s best-known actresses and a producer whose cinema releases draw big crowds.

Early career and Alakada

Toyin Abraham began her career in Yoruba-language films, building a strong following among Yoruba audiences. The Alakada character, a liar who pretends to be wealthy, became her signature role. The films were comedies with moral lessons. Alakada Reloaded, released in 2017, was a commercial success in cinemas.

Fate of Alakada followed in 2020, continuing the franchise. She has produced several films, moving from acting to building her own brand. Her film Ijakumo: The Born Again Stripper, released in 2022, was another box office success. She works in both English-language Nollywood and Yoruba films. She is married to actor Kolawole Ajeyemi, and the couple have a son.

Social media, controversy and awards

She has a large social media following, where she promotes her films and shares her life. Like many celebrities, she has been involved in public disputes online. She is part of a group of Nollywood women who have become successful producers. She has won awards for her acting. Audiences relate to the Alakada character because she exaggerates a familiar temptation: pretending to be richer or more important than one is. The films laugh at her lies while showing the consequences, and many viewers see in her a comic version of people they know. The mix of comedy and moral lesson made the franchise popular with families.

Yoruba film roots and fans

Before her English-language hits, she built her reputation in Yoruba films, which remain a major part of her career. Her cinema releases have performed strongly at the Nigerian box office, especially during holiday seasons. She has given roles to younger actors and supported newcomers in the industry. Her fans follow her closely on social media and turn out in large numbers for premieres.

Alakada pretends to be someone she is not. The actress who plays her has built a career that does not need any pretending.
